Original Great White Bassist Lorne Black Dies

Original GREAT WHITE bassist Lorne Black has died. He appeared on the band’s 1984 self-titled debut, 1986’s “Shot In The Dark” and 1987’s “Once Bitten…”.

Original GREAT WHITE singer Jack Russell, who is currently touring with a version of the band calling itself JACK RUSSELL’S GREAT WHITE, has posted the following statement: “It is with great sadness that we have been informed of the passing of Lorne Black yesterday [Friday, September 27]! Our hearts go out to his family, friends and fans.

Lorne was a huge part of the first incarnation of GREAT WHITE! May he rest in peace.”

Added GREAT WHITE guitarist Mark Kendall: “I saw [Lorne‘s] cousin Robert a few months ago and we were in touch. Robert told me Lorne wasn’t too good then.

“I lost Robert‘s number when I changed phones, which bums me out. He used to work for us.

“I loved Lorne and I am truly sad to get this news. I know he has battle demons for along time and I am so sad to hear of his passing.

“RIP, my friend…”

Billionaires are Ditching Their Yachts for Submarines

Yachts: So pedestrian, right? They just float there, bobbing up and down. According to Bloomberg News, founded by billionaire Michael Bloomberg, billionaires are disowning their giant yachts for personal submarines, priced between $1.2 and $4.5 million. Why? Bloomberg explains:

1) Yachts are distracting.

As the yacht size has stretched—this year saw the launch of a record-holding 590-footer called the Azzam—so has the list of distractions onboard. Soaking in a jacuzzi, shooting hoops on a floating court or playing a baby grand Steinway piano no longer cut it.

2) Drinking white wine is boring.

“There is a change in attitude of super-yacht owners,” said Bert Houtman, founder and chairman of the Netherlands-based U-Boat Worx, surveying two of his submarine models on display quai-side in Monaco. “They’re fed up with drinking white wine and riding jet skis so they’re looking for another thrill.”

3) It’s a great opportunity to buy another boat, simply to transport your personal submarine.

Storing an 18,000-pound submarine elegantly on a designer yacht can be a challenge. Makers urge owners to have bespoke boats conceived with subs in mind or, alternatively, invest in a “shadow” vessel to transport these types of toys and tenders, smaller speedboats that accompany super-sized yachts.

4) Billionaires are terrified of death and/or eternal damnation, and are constantly seeking new, absurdly expensive experiences to fill the gaping void at the center of their souls.

“A lot of guys who are billionaires have profound financial accomplishments and are now concerned about their legacy,” said Deppe.

And so: a personal submarine. Makes sense.

The First Jetpack You’ll Be Able to Buy Just Got a Slick New Design

Number two on the list of promised future technologies that have yet to be delivered, right behind the flying car, is the personal jetpack. Hollywood’s delivered them in spades thanks to special effects, but in real-life New Zealand-based Martin Aircraft is as close as we’re going to get. And now it’s even closer with the company’s latest re-design of its Jetpack—the P12.

Technically still a prototype, the P12 is promised to be very close to the final version of the Martin Jetpack that could be available commercially sometime in mid-2014. However, you’ll want to keep your $5,000 deposit in your pocket a little longer because the first units will be exclusively sold to first responders like police and fire personnel who will help field test the jetpacks.

With a top speed of just 46 mph you’ll have to put your Rocketeer fantasies on hold for just a little while longer. But with a suggested range of about 20 miles or half an hour on a full tank of premium gas, this could be the perfect commuter that isn’t effected by traffic gridlock. Albeit, a very, very expensive commuter with an expected price tag pushing $200,000, plus the cost of getting your Sport Pilot’s license in the US at least. But no one ever said progress was cheap.

The NSA Created Intricate Maps of the Social Connections of Citizens

In a report based on another set of documents leaked by Edward Snowden, journalists James Risen and Laura Poitras detail how the NSA has created vast social networks for U.S. citizensthrough spying on emails, phone calls, and possibly cellular phone call locations.

Under a loose interpretation of laws that were meant to regulate their spying, the NSA began to analyze emails and phone calls in November 2010, in an attempt to “discover and track” the communications between citizens and foreign intelligence targets. The spying, however, extended far into the private electronic communications of thousands of Americans, as the agency authorized its spies to conduct “large-scale graph analysis on very large sets of communications metadata without having to check foreignness.”

The agency then added public information like Facebook profiles, GPS location, and voter registration to create a social connections map (seen above in a slide taken by Snowden) not unlike the diagrams made to prove vast criminal enterprise (or conspiracy theories).

Legendary Poker Player Arrested for Marking Cards

A legendary poker player who once turned $50 into $40 million over a three-year streak was arrested this week for allegedly marking cards at a casino in Lakeside, CA.

Archie Karas (real name: Anargyros Karabourniotis) was caught on a Barona Casino surveillance camera marking cards. Authorities say he cheated the casino of $8,000.

Karas was arrested at his Las Vegas home and is facing extradition to San Diego. Karas has been arrested four times for cheating at casinos in California by card-marking, card-switching, and pressing bets. This time, he’s being charged with burglary, winning by fraudulent means and cheating.

Although authorities haven’t specified how Karas marked the cards, a Las Vegas gaming knowhow told ABC that, “It’s pretty much invisible to the naked eye except for those who have marked it and identified it… You can use a piece of sandpaper on your finger; you can use a tack glued to your finger; you can use the back of an earring.”
